Good Ol’ Goats releasing first CD

Cranbrook high school students plan CD release party to showcase new songs

The Good Ol’ Goats, a Cranbrook-based folk band comprised of six students in grades 11 and 12 at Mount Baker Secondary School (MBSS), are releasing their freshman CD, The Train. To celebrate their success, the Goats will launch the CD by hosting a concert at the Studio & Stage Door on September 15 to which members of the public are invited.

The Goats— who are all protégés of MBSS musical composition teacher, Evan Bueckert—have enjoyed meteoric success in the region since their first official gig in early February. Then, the band was made up of four musicians: Angus Liedtke on guitar, dobro, banjo, harmonica and vocals; Theo Moore on standup bass and backing vocals; Nolan Ackert on lead vocals, banjo and guitar; and Angus MacDonald on mandolin, backing vocals and fiddle. The reception was immediate and enthusiastic, and since that time, they have added other talented musicians to their ranks—Joelle Winkel on shaker and backing vocals and Julian Bueckert on drums. Alysha Seriani, who is also featured on the CD on melodion, rainstick, tambourine and backing vocals, has since moved to Vancouver to pursue an education in film and television.

The Goats have also been impressing crowds throughout the region, winning accolades and the top prize at Kimberley’s Youth Stock earlier this year and playing at small festivals and venues at every opportunity.

The CD features all-original songs written by Ackert and arranged by members of the band. Lotus Books in Cranbrook will be carrying the band’s CDs beginning September 14.

The Train CD release party takes place on September 15 at 8 p.m. at the Studio & Stage Door. Tickets are $15 and are available at Lotus Books in Cranbrook. For more information on The Good Ol’ Goats, please visit their Facebook page at www.facebook.com/TheGoodOlGoats.
