Valley Visions: works in Stained Glass Mosaics
Bev Delyea is a long-time Fernie resident who practices the little-known but ancient art of mosaics.
In Bev’s case, the choice of material for her mosaics in this exhibition is stained glass. Unlike stained glass (windows), which are transparent, stained glass in mosaics are glued to a substrate and (usually) grouted. Ancient mosaics were usually created with marble tesserae (or stone) and were a long-lasting artwork on floors and walls throughout Europe.
An impulsive decision 12 years ago, when she did a stained-glass mosaic frame for a mirror in a workshop, surprisingly turned into a long-term practice with mosaics. Learning by trial and error, relying on art courses taken decades before and on her former hobby of quilting, and finding excellent on-line mosaic communities, Bev continued to improve her mosaic skills. What most attracted Bev to using stained glass as a medium is the availability of beautiful and brilliant colours.
The mosaic art exhibit, Valley Visions in Stained Glass Mosaics is a collection of artworks she calls glass paintings. The one-of-a-kind, contemplative works “show the way I see the world, particularly in the Fernie area,” she said.
The mosaics include landscape, impressionistic and abstract works. A work in progress along with glass and tools will be on display at the Arts Station from the exhibition opening reception on Wednesday, March 25, from 7 to 9 p.m.
The exhibit continues until Monday, April 27.
