Snow clearance responsibility reminder
Fernie Chamber of Commerce this week shared ‘Notes on the Snow and Ice Removal Bylaw 1928’ regarding City of Fernie requirements for snow clearance on sidewalks and around businesses.
The notice was provided as information only for members to use as they see fit to benefit their businesses, the chamber notice outlined.
Sidewalks
Sidewalks are to be clean of ice and snow before 9 a.m. each day. Snow from sidewalks can be pushed onto the streets. Pushing snow into existing windrows in the middle of the street would assist in keeping parking lanes free of snow.
Awnings and Overhangs
Cornices, ice, icicles, hanging snow must be removed from any roof, awning, marquee which may fall and cause personal or property damage.
Snow piling
Piles may not be within 30 feet of a corner or intersection such that it obstructs visibility. Snow piles shall not be made on any highway, footpath, sidewalk or boulevard. Municipal Infraction Tickets may be issued for violation of the bylaw.
Fines amounts
Dumping snow within 30 feet of a corner – $50 ; Placing snow on highway $50 ; Fail to clean sidewalk $100.
City Bylaw Officer Ryan Borjemsky shared at our meeting that he typically makes rounds between 9:30 and 10 a.m. and is looking for snow and ice to be removed to the cement.
Parking lots
Snow from parking lots is not to be pushed onto the street. The city has provided a Snow Dump located adjacent to the bottle depot. There is no fee for use; however, contractors must sign an agreement form with the city. Contact Dave Cockwell at the city for more details; 250-423-2230 .
