Summer Socials seeks funding from Fernie businesses
The Summer Socials Committee, represented by business owners, Fernie Chamber of Commerce and the City of Fernie was initiated in the spring of 2011. A number of interested business people decided that in order to raise the profile of the downtown core a Fernie task force needed to be struck to work on a series of interesting events during the months of July and August.
Over the past three years the committee has continued to develop its mandate; taking into consideration feedback from our business community, residents and visitors.
The City of Fernie has been incredibly generous providing $10,000 in year one and $15,000 for years two, three and four through the province’s Resort Municipality Initiative program. Unfortunately, we have witnessed the decline of financial support from our businesses over the last two years.
We have requested the amount of $100 that we believe demonstrates to the RMI program that the business community is keen to develop these ideas and we believe that $100 is value for money.
The committee is being open when we say that we need your support. The city has been generous through the allocation of RMI funds and we need to be able to demonstrate that our business community is in full support of this initiative. If not, we run the risk of the city deciding to allocate these RMI funds elsewhere next year. This would be very disappointing as we believe that the concept continues to develop and becomes more interesting and inviting.
Our visitors tell us that they are ‘looking for things to do,’ and in general Sundays have been busier in town during the last two summers. The increase in customer traffic over the nine Sunday Socials and eight Wednesday Night Socials would seem to make the amount requested a good business investment.
Activities such as the Summer Socials are integral to maintaining a sense of a vibrant community and we hope you see the benefit of supporting such a worthy community event.
We hope we can count on you to help us in this manner. If your business is located on Second Avenue, a committee member will visit you soon and willingly collect the payment or alternatively, the Chamber of Commerce can send you an invoice.
Thank you for your interest and support in helping to ensure the ongoing success of this initiative!
