Cranbrook celebrates Earth Day
Cranbrook’s Rotary Park was the site of an afternoon-long Earth Day celebration, Saturday, April 21.
Sponsored by Wildsight, the well-attended public celebration called Cranbrook: Downtown Goes Wild featured a carnival atmosphere, with a wide range of food, fun and information booths available for all ages.
Headlining the day was former NHL superstar Scott Niedermayer, who also headlined a Saturday evening ‘Uptown Goes Wild’ event at Royal Alexandra Hall. Cranbrook born and raised Niedermayer delivered a keynote address on the Wilds of the Kootenays along with a stunning slideshow and exhibition of images from regional wildlife and nature photographer Brad Hill.
Niedermayer, who captained Canada’s 2010 Olympic Winter Games gold medal hockey team, has become an outspoken opponent of the Jumbo Glacier Resort Ltd. proposal to build a $1 billion ski resort proposal in the Jumbo Valley, 55 km west of Invermere.
