8,000 animal abuse/neglect cases investigated each year
Today (April 23) is Animal Abuse Prevention Day in British Columbia and the BC SPCA is hoping the province鈥檚 communities will rally around a great cause by taking action.
Animal Abuse Prevention Day has been observed since 2011 after a private citizen requested a provincial proclamation as a memorial to 56 sled dogs in Whistler, that lost their lives on April 23, 2010. That proclamation has been observed by the provincial government each year since, making this year the fourth annual event.
The BC SPCA investigates nearly 8,000 complaints of animal abuse and neglect each year, but the good news is, you can help. Everyone is invited to help the province鈥檚 most vulnerable animals. Here are a few of the things you can do:
路聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 Don鈥檛 be a bystander!聽If you are concerned that an animal may be in distress, do not ignore it. Your actions could help save a life. In addition to protecting the animal, you may also be protecting children or adults at risk of being harmed. Recognize the聽signs of an animal in distress聽and report animal cruelty to BC SPCA鈥檚 toll-free hotline at 1-855-622-7722.
路聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 Take responsibility for the animals in your life.聽Animals are a part of everyone鈥檚 life. Pets, wildlife,聽farm animals聽and animals used in research can all benefit from our actions.Be a responsible animal guardian, learn about聽the Five Freedoms, choose聽SPCA Certified聽foods and protect聽wildlife.
路聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 Speak up for animals.聽Send a message to your local elected officials聽to let them know how important it is to have strong animal protection legislation as well as resources for animal cruelty law enforcement and prevention work. You can also聽add your voice to one of our animal welfare campaigns.
路聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 Teach the kids in your life that kindness counts.聽Early prevention is our best weapon in the fight against animal abuse.聽Summer camps,聽Pro-D day workshops,聽school presentations,聽teacher curriculum units聽and our popular聽Kids Club聽are just some of the engaging ways the BC SPCA鈥檚聽youth education programs聽help children of all ages develop lifelong empathy skills and learn the value of compassion toward all living things.

The BC SPCA is a non-profit organization funded primarily by public donations. Our mission is to prevent cruelty and to promote the welfare of animals through a wide range of services, including cruelty investigations, emergency rescue and treatment, sheltering and adoption of homeless and abused animals, humane education, advocacy, farm animal welfare, spay/neuter programs, and wildlife rescue and rehabilitation.
