Batman needs help to help kids

By Marija Caron

If you ask the kids around Sparwood who Batman is? They respond with, “That’s Mr. Nelson.”

A smile or chuckle usually follows.

No one knows why he tries to convince the kids he is Batman.  Duane Nelson has been volunteering with the Sparwood Fire Department for the last 20 years and has seen a lot of tragedies.

He has an idea to further his compassionate ways. His dream is to visit sick children in children’s hospitals (who are the real heroes in Duane’s eyes), dressed as Batman.

He doesn’t want the local department store costume he wants to look professional. He wants to visit the kids with a costume that the kids won’t question. He has even perfected the low, quiet, husky voice of Batman.

He wants to visit children in his spare time something most of us would appreciate. We all know or have a child who has visited a Children’s Hospital and wouldn’t that be exciting to add that sparkle to a kid’s scary stay?

Here is someone who wants to make that happen. Unfortunately the cost of the professional suit is $4,600. He is trying to raise the money through GoFundme.com.

If all the parents and grandparents and Batman fans all donated a few dollars maybe we could participate in Duane’s random act of kindness. Bring a smile to a child’s face by donating to http://www.gofundme.com/Superhero-Smiles
