Be Bear Aware, city urges

We live in a wonderful natural setting and with that comes responsibilities to prevent encounters with wildlife.

“The recent incident of a grizzly bear breaking into a home in Kimberley reminds us to be prepared,” the City of Fernie stated on its website yesterday, August 10.

“Encountering wildlife is not unusual in our community. Keeping garbage stored until collection day and away from wildlife (per Waste Regulation Bylaw No. 1845) helps prevent property damage, increases safety and avoids the unnecessary killing of bears that come into conflict with people. Remember – garbage, birdseed and pet foods on your property attract bears and increases the potential for wildlife conflicts,” the city reminds residents and visitors.

“Don’t be part of the problem by baiting bears into the community with easy access to food rewards. Your assistance in reducing these conflicts is appreciated.”
