Campfire, fireworks ban for Fernie
Effective at noon, Friday, July 3, the City of Fernie, Fire and Emergency Services will prohibit all campfires (including all fire pits) and fireworks within the city boundary.
In addition BC Wildfire Service announced campfires and fireworks are prohibited throughout the Southeast Fire Centre effective July 3. This ban is in effect until further notice.
The bans have been issued due to hot and dry conditions and to help prevent human-caused wildfires and protect public safety.
The Southeast Fire Centre also reminds the public that anyone found in contravention of a fire prohibition may be issued a ticket for $345, required to pay an administrative penalty of $10,000 or, if convicted in court, fined up to $100,000 and/or sentenced to one year in jail. If the contravention causes or contributes to a wildfire, the person responsible may be ordered to pay all firefighting and associated costs.
