Charges for Teck from 2012 sediment flow
Teck Coal Limited was notified August 21 of charges under the Environmental Management Act and the Fisheries Act in relation to the discharge of water containing sediment and monitoring, reporting and construction practices associated with a 2012 maintenance project at Teck’s Elkview Operations.
The project took place in August and September of 2012 on the main sediment pond at Elkview Operations and resulted in water containing sediment flowing from the site into the Elk River.
There was no human health risk associated with this incident and no indication of long-term adverse impacts the environment.
“We have thoroughly reviewed this incident and have since taken a number of steps including changes in procedure and employee training to prevent a reoccurrence. We take this issue very seriously and are committed to continually improving our environmental performance,” said Robin Sheremeta, Teck Coal Vice President, Operations.
