Cold snap alert for East Kootenay

Folks planning on attending and being in the Santa Claus Parade in Cranbrook Friday night, you will want to dress warmly.

Environment Canada this afternoon released a ‘special weather statement’ in effect for the East Kootenay, especially for the Columbia Valley and Cranbrook areas, warning of a cold snap on Thursday and Friday (Nov. 27 and 28).

“Following significant snowfall and rising temperatures, a drastic cold snap will occur across the interior on Thursday and Friday.
Cold Arctic air will push southward throughout the day on Thursday across the Central Interior and make its way into the Columbia and Southwest Interior Thursday night or Friday morning,” Environment Canada warns.

“The leading edge of the Arctic air will be accompanied by gusty winds and plummeting temperatures. Areas where temperatures remained below freezing will experience reduced visibilities in blowing snow. Further south, where milder air caused snowmelt, flash freeze will cause wet surfaces to become icy and slippery in the southern interior Thursday night.

“Slippery highways, roads and walkways will make travel hazardous. Consider altering travel plans.
The cold air will continue to push south and reach the Kootenays on Friday producing similar conditions. The below seasonal temperatures will last into next week, Environment Canada outlined.

The public is advised to monitor future forecasts and warnings as warnings may be required or extended.
