Columbia Valley Community Foundation AGM June 10
The Columbia Valley Community Foundation invites members of the public and the charitable sector to its annual general meeting at Pynelogs Cultural Centre on Tuesday, June 10, starting at 7 p.m.
The Columbia Valley Community Foundation (Foundation), a registered charity, is a collection of endowment funds established by donors from all walks of life. Funds are pooled and invested with the income distributed as grants to registered charitable organizations that primarily benefit the citizens of the Columbia Valley.
The Foundation, one of 191 community foundations across Canada, is celebrating 12 years of connecting donors to community needs and opportunities in Columbia Valley communities, between Spillimacheen and Canal Flats.
Founded in 2001, the Columbia Valley Community Foundation began grant making in 2002, and by the end of 2013 grant funds awarded totaled $322,038 to Canadian charitable organizations and others qualified as described in Section 110 of the Income Tax Act.
The Foundation has granted to community priorities in these areas (ranked from highest to lowest percentage): recreation, community facilities, children and youth, arts and culture, health and safety, the environment, literacy, student awards and social services. Issues identification, project delivery, initiatives leadership and co-granting are passionately led by our capable community partners, most notably the Columbia Basin Trust, Vancouver Foundation and Kootenay Savings Community Foundation. Grant recipients will be on hand at the annual general meeting to share their stories.
In 2012, the Foundation received its largest ever single donation in the amount of $1,475,000 to a named, field-of-interest fund called the Arnold Ellis Bursary Fund. Now, assets of the Foundation total $2,372,358.
The Foundation is governed by a local board of directors of community leaders and is supported by professional staff and investment management. The purpose of the 2014 annual general meeting is, in part, to conduct the annual business of the charity, and to invite prospective directors, committee members and volunteers to bring their talents to one of the key philanthropic organizations in the Columbia Valley that works with pride to build legacies in our valley communities.
