Assault under investigation

At 3:20 p.m. on July 9, Columbia Valley RCMP Detachment responded to a complaint of assault in the 3200 block of Highway 93/95 in Fairmont Hot Springs. A 34-year-old male and 29-year-old male were in an argument and accused each other of assault. Investigation is continuing to determine the facts.

Thanks to the compassionate

The detachment would like to thank a number of citizens who stopped and assisted a young female in distress near the CPR overpass At 11:30 a.m. on July 10. Further assistance will be provided.

Vehicle keyed

At 5:30 p.m. on July 10, the detachment received a complaint of a vehicle being keyed while parked at No Frills parking lot.

Power line down on Toby Creek Road

At 8:30 p.m. on July 10, Panorama Fire Department and RCMP attended to a downed power line on Toby Creek Road as a result of a severe thunderstorm.

Child hospitalized after tampering with pool chemicals

At 9:25 p.m. on July 10, police responded to a complaint of mischief that resulted in a pool shed being entered and a container of granulated chloride being tampered with. Staff determined that a young person under the age of 12 entered the shed and with no intent to cause damage tampered with the chemical resulting in the child being taken to the hospital.

Best return the call

At 10:17 a.m. on July 11, a complaint of threats was made on Facebook to do physical harm to a person. The identified suspect male was contacted by the police. The suspect male then repeated to the police that he intended to follow through with his threat and it was up to the police to stop him. Great evidence. A police business card is presently hanging on the suspect’s door requesting an opportunity to meet.

B&E on River Road

The detachment received a complaint of Break and Enter on River Road. Entry was gained by damaging the front door. Owner to attend and advise if any items are stolen.

Halting drunk driving causes night of separation

At 1:23 a.m. on July 12, Columbia Valley Detachment members responded to a disturbance at the Fairmont RV campground. It was determined that an intoxicated male indicated he would drive his vehicle. His female companion threw the vehicle keys in the bush to prevent the male from driving. Police sided with the female and suggested the couple separate for the evening.

Negotiation 101

One thing learned over the years with the RCMP is the art of negotiation.

It got me out of a few tight spots being able to reach a successful conclusion to make it a win-win situation for all.

With 40 years under my belt I rather pride myself in my abilities to negotiate with people. The lessons learned with police negotiations I will use in my personal life. However, in police work I find that I have other officers covering my back, supporting my skills.

Bev has to learn to back me up; knows what to say to support a successful negotiation. I recently had a computer taken in for repairs in Calgary for a simple hinge problem. The end result: it was returned to me in worse repair and the screen destroyed.

So negotiation strategy; go in angry, only deal with the manager, look for $800 compensation to purchase a new computer with the idea I would accept $400 put towards a new computer.

In the middle of the tough negotiation in front of the manager, Bev pipes up: “the computer is three-years-old; you will be lucky to get $150.”

I turn to Bev and under my breath point out I am negotiating. Turn to the manager and he has the look on his face that speaks loudly; “I like how your wife thinks.”

The manager is obviously married and now he knows he has the upper hand and I’m hooped. Negotiations did not go in my favour. As I walked out of the store I announced that we are going to Pro Bass store. Looking at buying something expensive for the boat.
