Crime spree field narrowed in Kimberley

By Brenda Ann Babinski

Corporal Chris Newel, acting NCO of the Kimberley RCMP Detachment presented at the City of Kimberley council meeting August 24 that It has been a busy summer for the detachment, with higher than usual numbers of cars broken into, auto thefts, and property break and enters.

According to Newel as at August 23 the number of incidents reported this August is already higher than for the full month of August in 2014.

The rash of crimes has kept the detachment busy, but Newel is optimistic that the spree has come to an end. Several individuals of interest have either been taken into custody or have appeared before the courts facing charges.

The vast scope of offences being committed led Cpl. Newel to believe that there were many individuals involved. “People who rifle through cars at night for $5 are not the same people who steal a car and dump it at the golf course later that night,” he stated.

One individual had been living in a tent in the Townsite area. He is now facing multiple charges. Another individual who stole a vehicle in Kimberley was arrested in Kamloops. Three other subjects have been before the courts on minor charges. Another individual, whom Newel described as “a major player in a lot of stuff,” has been arrested in conjunction with the theft of recreational vehicles from the Lumberton area last weekend.

The sweep of arrests in the past week should have Kimberley seeing a slow-down in the rate of crimes in the area.

“This quarter is always the busiest,” Newel said. “These arrests have narrowed the field considerably.”
