EKOHDE holding AGM May 15

The East Kootenay Organization for Human Dignity and EqualityĀ (EKOHDE)Ā has been providing education and programming in the East Kootenay since 2003.

Our Mission statement: We pledgeĀ to work forĀ caring communities, free from racism and opposed to cultural alienation and hate crimes, communities that offer equal opportunity to all, and thus provide the prerequisites of a just, social and economic future for theĀ  children and the full development of human resources in an atmosphere of harmonious solidarity, respect of individual rights and appreciation of cultural diversity.

We partner with the Elk Valley Metis Association and a recent project (funded by the province)Ā has been the development of the Humanity Network (http://www.humanitynetwork.ca/) Ā which connects communities in the East KootenayĀ so they may work together to make all of theĀ region a welcoming place where we all want to live, that everyone regardless of background and differences, feels they are treated equitably and with respect and has the right and duty to do likewise to others.

The goal is to increase awareness of human dignity and the values of humanity that Canada and BC have been identified with, and to grow our collective understanding of the importance of these values in our communities. The Humanity Network hosted an event in December, which was the celebration of International Mountain Day (DecemberĀ 11),Ā funded by the Government of Canada and the Province of B.C. through Embrace BC.

Anthropologist, author and explorer Wade Davis offered two presentations, one in Cranbrook and one in Invermere. Well attended, Mr.Ā Davis’ presentation had a profound effect on local youth one of whom may be travelling to the Amazon. The Network has selected the next three United Nations International Days for celebration.

EKOHDE will be having their Annual General Meeting on May 15 at 4 p.m. in Room 101 at Mount Baker Secondary School. This AGM is open to the public and if there are any questions in advance of the meeting please contact Roberta at [email protected]
