Elkford man killed in two-vehicle crash

A two-vehicle accident near Elkford last evening claimed the life of a local man.

At approximately 5:05 p.m., Elk Valley RCMP came across a motor vehicle accident on Highway 43 approximately three kilometres south of Elkford.

The collision occurred when a northbound Hyundai Accent lost control and entered the southbound lane, where it struck a commercial flatdeck vehicle.

An 87-year-old man from Elkford was pronounced deceased at the scene. The 21-year-old male driver of the commercial vehicle was transported to Elk Valley Hospital with minor injuries.

The matter is being investigated by RCMP and the B.C. Coroner’s Services. It is believed that “driving too fast for road conditions” was a contributing factor in this collision, reported the RCMP’s East Kootenay Traffic Services.

The accident closed Highway 43 for more than two hours. The highway was snow covered with slippery sections, according to DriveBC.

District of Elkford Mayor Dean McKerracher told e-KNOW this morning the deceased was a much-loved, long-time community member.
