Elko Fire Protection closer to reality

On the heels of a successful assent voting process in November, the Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) is moving forward with the establishment of a fire protection service in Elko.

The regional board of directors Dec. 12 adopted the Service Establishment and Loan Authorization Bylaws and Electoral Area B Director Stan Doehle Dec. 12 said this is the first step towards getting a fire service in place. “This is a great day for Elko. It is an exciting time for Elko and the many volunteers who have worked to bring fire protection to their community.”

RDEK staff will now begin recruiting for volunteer firefighters, working towards constructing a fire hall, and gathering the necessary equipment. “It is important for the community to understand that until all these pieces are in place, there is no fire protection in Elko,” stressed Doehle.

The RDEK hopes to have the fire protection service established in the fall of 2015 and will be communicating with the community on its progress throughout the year.

“After spending years in the fire service, I understand the truly lifesaving opportunity this brings to Elko. I would like to thank the community members, Canfor and the RDEK staff who have worked on this project and look forward to the day that this new service begins,” added Doehle.
