Fatality crash on Hwy 43 near Sparwood

rcmplogoThe Elk Valley RCMP and East Kootenay Traffic Services attended to a two vehicle fatal collision on Hwy 43 North of Sparwood late Thursday afternoon. The collision resulted in the death of one driver and serious life threatening injuries to the second driver involved.

On September 19, at around 4:49 p.m., the Elk Valley RCMP responded to a report of a fatal motor vehicle collision on Hwy 43 at Savarie Road, north of Sparwood. Once on scene Elk Valley RCMP and East Kootenay Traffic Services confirmed that one of the drivers was deceased as result of the collision.

The initial scene examination and witness accounts have assisted in determining that the collision occurred when a southbound passenger car, carrying a lone male driver, attempted to pass a vehicle in a two lane passing section of roadway.

The passenger car was unable to complete the pass safely and collided with a northbound pickup truck carrying a lone male driver. The male driver of the passenger car (age late 20s), was deceased at the scene.

The male driver of the pick-up truck (age late 30s to 40), who suffered severe crush injuries to his chest and lower body, was been taken to Sparwood Hospital and later transferred to Calgary Foothills Hospital via STARS air ambulance with serious life threatening injuries.

RCMP Traffic Services investigators and a collision reconstruction analyst, examined the scene collecting evidence throughout the evening. The collision occurred during daylight hours. The weather and road conditions at the time were clear and dry with good visibility.

Both drivers have been identified and efforts to notify next of kin are being carried out.

No further information is being released at this time.
