Fernie company bringing skydiving event to town
The sky over Fernie will come alive March 22.
A city company has organized an event that will feature professional skydivers dropping down into the city and land at the Fernie Secondary School field.
Lance Edwards, owner of Elevation Showcase, based out of Fernie, is bringing a team of professional skydivers (Kavu Athletes and The GoPro Bomb Squad) from the United States.
“These talented ‘Pro’ rated jumpers have recently been hired to parachute into NASCAR events, NFL football stadiums, and so many more. So why not bring them to Fernie and put on an amazing show?” Edwards stated in a Feb. 12 email to City of Fernie Mayor Mary Giuliano.
“The current plan is to have the jumpers exit from a helicopter above 2nd Avenue and fly across town in wingsuits and land at the high school! The event will be held on the high school football / soccer fields,” Edwards related.
“We plan on having the wingsuit skydivers exit a helicopter and safely parachute down and land in a secure landing zone on the soccer fields in front of all the spectators,” he said, guessing between 500 and spectators would witness the event.
“We plan on having a beer garden – organized by a local non profit organization,” Edwards added.
The date for the event is proposed for March 22, with event grounds open to public at 3 p.m. The demonstration is planned for 4 p.m. and the grounds will close at 6 p.m.
March 23 (Sunday) will be the ‘bad weather’ day should March 22 prove to be inclement.
KAVU will host a post event party at the Northern (561 2nd Ave, Fernie) following.
Fernie-based retailer/distributor, Elevation Showcase, recently acquired the Canadian distribution rights to KAVU, an American lifestyle/adventure clothing brand. In celebration of the partnership KAVU sponsored athletes will jump from helicopters and fly across town landing at the event site.
