Fernie Council Connection

The following is a breakdown as to what occurred during the March 9 City of Fernie council meeting.

1. AGREEMENTS, LICENCES PERMITS & POLICIES

1.1 Development Variance Permit No. 364  – Council approved the Development Variance Permit Application No. DVPA-364 for the property at 521- 5th Avenue and gave notice of their intention to consider the issuance of Development Variance Permit No. DVP-364 to vary the minimum rear yard setback for a secondary detached dwelling unit from 6.0 metres to 1.52 metres along a portion of the west property line. 2. BYLAWS

cof2.1 Bylaw No. 2266, Zoning Bylaw No. 1750, Amendment Bylaw No. 173, Bylaw No. 2266, 2014  – Council gave first and second reading to the application submitted to amend Zoning Bylaw No. 1750 by rezoning the property at 521 – 5th Avenue from R1 – Single Family Residential to R1B – Single Detached Plus Residential. 2.2 Bylaw No. 2271, Zoning Bylaw No. 1750, Amendment Bylaw No. 174, 2014  – Council adopted Bylaw No. 2271 which proposes text amend Zoning Bylaw No. 1750 by adding “Single Family Dwellings” as a permitted use in the C-HWY zone to specific properties as well proposes to text amend Zoning Bylaw No. 1750 by adding “Home Occupation” as an accessory use in the C-HWY zone and other amendments to the C-HWY zone text related to regulating the proposed “Single Family Dwellings” permitted use. 2.3 Bylaw No. 2275, Zoning Bylaw No. 1750, Amendment Bylaw No. 176, 2015  – Council gave first and second reading to the application submitted to amend zoning Bylaw No. 1750 by rezoning the property at 1301 – 10th Avenue from R2 – Duplex Residential to R1B – Single Detached Plus Residential. 3. OTHER INFORMATIONAL ITEMS

3.1 94th Annual Mine Rescue and First Aid Competition – East Kootenay Mine Industrial Safety Association (EKMISA’s) Zone, Mine Rescue and First Aid Competition  – Council authorized the attendance of the Mayor and any members of council wishing to attend the upcoming competition to be held in Elkford on Saturday May 9, 94th Annual Mine Rescue & First Aid

3.2 Mayor’s Poetry Challenge re: challenge to the Mayors across Canada to participate in an annual Mayor’s Poetry City Challenge    –  Council agreed to participate in the Challenge and will contact local schools to seek interest from an English student as well an adult in community to participate in the challenge. 3.3 Fernie Rod and Gun Club request for Resort Municipality Initiative Funding  – Council approved a grant from the Resort Municipality Tourism Incentives Investment Fund to assist the Fernie Rod and Gun Club with the cost of rental fees for city facilities required to host the upcoming British Columbia Wildlife Federation (BCWF) Convention.

3.4 Fernie Trails Alliance – Council agreed to support the application and partner with the Fernie Trails Alliance in the spirit they requested to work towards the implementation of the proposed Fairy Creek Bridge Project Fairy Creek Bridge Project

3.5 Professional Association of Residents of British Columbia  – Council will extend an invitation to a representative of this organization to attend an upcoming Committee of the Whole meeting to discuss residency education in the area Resident Doctors of BC

4. UPCOMING MEETINGS AND OTHER NEWS

4.1 Next Regular Meeting and Committee of the Whole (COTW). The next regular scheduled meeting will be on: Monday, March 23, at 10 a.m. & 7 p.m. Council meetings are streamed live and can be viewed on-demand on the City’s website or watched on Shaw TV Channel 10 at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and 11 a.m. on Thursdays.

4.3 New Playground for Ridgemont Park  – City worker’s will be removing existing playground equipment from March 16 to March 20 at Ridgemont Park to prepare for new equipment expected to be installed in June 2015.  For more information please contact the Leisure Services department at 250-423-2245.
