Flood safety tips; Moyie River part of new advisoryPosted: April 27, 2012

Emergency Management BC is urging residents in the B.C’s South Interior to take special care where there are high stream-flow advisories.

The BC River Forecast Centre has issued advisories for the Okanagan, Similkameen River tributaries, West Kootenay and East Kootenay (including the Moyie River) and Boundary region (including Granby and Kettle River).

Residents, recreationalists and visitors to these regions are urged to use extreme caution on and near all waterways. Floodwaters can be fast-rising and fast-moving.

As well, floodwaters can carry with them large pieces of debris and make shorelines unstable. People are asked to stay away from the water’s edge where increased flood risks have been identified and to be especially vigilant for the safety of children and pets along rivers and creeks that can prove unpredictable and dangerous.

People should take the following precautions:

* Avoid small creeks and rivers, as their channels tend to be narrow and can fill up quickly. Also, eroded banks result in unstable ground.

* Watch for changing conditions, particularly if you live in low-lying areas or near waterways.

* Check perimeter drains around your property and ensure they are clear of debris.

* Drive carefully and never attempt to drive through floodwater. If you are planning to travel, follow current highway conditions and any road closures. If your vehicle stalls in floodwater, get out quickly and move to higher ground.

* Always obey emergency officials who are involved in rescue or flood control operations, including those directing traffic.

Emergency Management BC works year-round with local governments to prepare for emergencies. For more information on how you and your family can get prepared, or to monitor emergency alerts and advisories in the province, visit: www.emergencyinfobc.gov.bc.ca .
