Funding announced for hiking bridge in Fernie

The Fernie Trails Alliance has received a $15,000 grant from the B.C. government to go toward the construction of a pedestrian bridge over Fairy Creek on the west side of Highway 3.

The timber-frame bridge will enhance public safety by providing pedestrians and cyclists a way to cross the creek without travelling alongside busy highway traffic.

“Fernie is well-known as a hub for outdoor recreation, and this project will encourage residents and tourists to take advantage of the great trails in the area,” Kootenay East MLA Bill Bennett said.

“Thousands of bikers, hikers, runners and families can look forward to a safe and attractive pedestrian bridge. I want to thank Regional District of East Kootenay Electoral Area A director Mike Sosnowski for identifying this great opportunity.”

“We are grateful to Bill Bennett and the B.C. government for supporting this important project,” Fernie Trails Alliance president Terry Nelson said. “This has been a priority for many years and thanks to this support, we can make the project a reality.”

The Fernie Trails Alliance is a non-profit society and a registered charity that is devoted to developing and maintaining a system of non-motorized, multi-use trails in the Fernie area.
