Heart attack claims triathlete

A triathlete suffered a fatal heart attack while competing in the Heart of the Rockies Triathlon Saturday morning in Lake Windermere.

At 11 a.m. July 12, Windermere Fire Department, Columbia Valley RCMP, BC Ambulance and numerous Heart of the Rockies Triathlon safety volunteers monitoring on the water assisted a 53-year-old male who suffered a heart attack during the swimming portion of the triathlon.

All attempts at the scene and at Invermere and District Hospital unfortunately failed to revive the male.

“It was brought to my attention by Bruce (Stroud, race organizer), that the deceased’s wife wished to reach out to everyone involved to express her appreciation and thanks to all who did everything in their power to give her husband a fighting chance,” said S/Sgt. Marko Shehovac of the Columbia Valley RCMP Detachment.
