Highway 3 closed at Sparwood: now open

Highway travel is not advised in the East Kootenay at this time.

Drive BC is reporting that Highway 3 is closed at Sparwood (junction of Highway 43) due to limited visibility with heavy snowfall and because the highway is closed on the Alberta side.

Highway 3/95 is also currently closed 10 km west of Cranbrook due to an accident by the Lumberton turnoff.

Drive BC also reports:

Black ice on Highway 3 both directions; black ice from Wardner to Elko (29.4 km).

Slushy with slippery sections on Highway 3 both directions; Slushy with slippery sections from Elko to Fernie (29.5 km).

Limited visibility with blowing snow on Highway 3 both directions; Limited visibility with blowing snow from Sparwood to British Columbia and Alberta border (21.4 km).

Limited visibility with fog on Highway 43 Both directions; Limited visibility with fog from Junction with Highway 3 to Elkford (34.7 km).

Black ice on Highway 93 Both directions. Black ice from British Columbia and Montana border to Junction with Highway 3, in Elko (26.9 km).

E-KNOW is also receiving reports of numerous power outages in Cranbrook.

According to Environment Canada, weather conditions in Cranbrook are expected to improve by later today (Dec. 2).

“Snow at times heavy ending late this afternoon then cloudy. Amount 10 to 15 cm. Wind becoming north 30 km/h this afternoon. High minus one,” it reports.

In Sparwood: “Snow ending late this afternoon then cloudy. Amount five to 10 cm except 15 cm near Fernie. Wind becoming northeast 30 km/h gusting to 50 this morning. High minus four with temperature falling to minus 11 this afternoon.”

At Invermere: “Snow ending late this afternoon then cloudy. Amount five cm. High minus five with temperature falling to minus 10 this afternoon.”

In Kootenay National Park (Highway 93): “A few flurries ending late this afternoon then cloudy. Amount two cm. Wind becoming east 30 km/h gusting to 50 this morning. High minus nine.”
