Highway conditions a mixed bag
Light overnight snow throughout the East Kootenay mixed with current temperatures in the 0C to -4C range are combining to make regional highways a mixed bag of conditions right now.
DriveBC reports that highways in the region are covered with compact snow, with slippery and slushy sections.
There was one accident already earlier this morning on Highway 3 six kilometres west of Sparwood. The road was reduced to single lane alternating traffic.
“More snow is expected today and freezing rain is possible due to the warming trend. This is more likely south of Canal Flats and it’s also possible in the Elk Valley,” Mainroad East Kootenay noted in an update this morning.
“Scattered precipitation, mostly snow, is expected for the next 48 hours with temperatures cooling late this afternoon. These are ideal conditions for ice formation and road conditions anywhere in the district could change rapidly. Expect winter driving conditions throughout.
Mainroad crews are out plowing and sanding with priority being given to main highways. Please give our crews room to do their work. Keep a safe distance and always stay alert,” Mainroad stated.
The current forecast is indicating snow off and on right through the weekend with steady snow expected from Saturday.
Please slow down and drive according to highway conditions. Check DriveBC for up-to-date road conditions.
