Ice jams cause flooding concerns
Ice jams in Joseph Creek in Cranbrook areĀ creating the potential for some flooding issues in low lying areas this afternoon (Dec. 4).
The several freeze thaw cycles we have seen over the past month have created a lot of weak ice which is now breaking up and causing Joseph Creek to back up in several locations around the community.
Public Works advises that Joseph Creek is close to coming over the bridge at 1A Street South and 15th Avenue South around the apartment buildings across from Mount Baker Secondary School ā a traditional flood area. Public Works will have crews working tomorrow to remove ice jams in key locations along Joseph Creek to allow the water to flow.
Residents traditionally affected by flooding are asked to prepare for the potential to see some flooding over the next few days. Empty sandbags are available beside the Public Works yard on Cobham Avenue for those who want them. Residents will be responsible to fill the sandbags themselves.
The City of Cranbrook will continue to monitor the water over the course of the weekend and keep the public up to date on any changes.
Residents are advised to please stay away from any creeks, including Joseph Creek and lakes including both Elizabeth and Idlewild Lake. Ice conditions on both lakes will most likely be very poor and someone may be able to fall through.
The weather forecast is calling for warmer temperatures and the potential for some light snow or rainfall over the next couple of days.
