Kimberley RCMP receive two new police vehicles

For years the accepted police car for the RCMP was the Ford Crown Victoria. In the past few months Kimberley RCMP received two of the new Ford police vehicles as the old Crown Vics came up for replacement.

KIM RCMP 1Ford offers two vehicles in the Police Interceptor series, the Sedan (Taurus – pictured above) and Utility (Explorer – right). Kimberley was one of the first detachments in B.C. to receive the new 2013 Ford Taurus and Explorer Police Interceptors, which are specially configured and modified police vehicles.

The new Police Interceptor model has several purpose built features including a V6 engine, a six speed automatic transmission, four wheel disc brakes and all-wheel drive. The all-wheel drive system will allow for better traction in our winter and wet road conditions and is expected to be very popular with police officers.

The 3.5 litre V6 engine will produce 280 hp, which will allow for both speed and better fuel mileage and it is very agile with a short turning radius and quick acceleration. There are a multitude of safety features built in to the new models in addition to heavy-duty suspension, brakes and electrical system. Even the driver’s area is configured to fit the extra electronic equipment including lap tops, emergency equipment controller and radar units. The seat is contoured to allow for the intervention tools an officer wears on his belt.

In 2011, the Crown Victoria model was discontinued by the Ford Motor Company. For more than a decade the Crown Victoria has been the workhorse for policing in the province. From 1997 to 2013, close to 2,000 Crown Victoria cars have been configured for police use in British Columbia.
