Local student makes top 10 in national contest

The 10 finalists for the Start Something with Alesse contest have been selected out of more than 1,500 submissions from across Canada – and it’s a proud day for Sparwood, as the community’s own Taylor Marchi, a 17-year-old Sparwood Secondary School student, is one of the finalists!

image003Now in its sixth year, the contest is a way to encourage millennials to articulate and pursue their ideas, big or small. Young Canadians submit their idea to “start” something, for a chance to win support to get their idea off the ground. The top two finalists will win $5,000 plus mentoring to help bring their idea to life and all runners-up will win $500!

Taylor (pictured above) is no stranger to Canada’s favourite pastime. A proud teammate on the Elk Valley Wild Girls hockey team for nine years, her passion for the ice and love of the sport led her to pitch her idea, Shot at Hockey.

Simply put, Taylor wants to ensure that everyone has a Shot at Hockey. While playing hockey came easy for Taylor, she found the greatest challenge met by herself and her teammates was accessibility to affordable hockey equipment.

While hand-me-downs or second-hand equipment was at times available, sizes were not easy to find and players would sometimes resort to wearing equipment that did not fit properly. By making donated used and new equipment available to everyone, Shot at Hockey will make sure that every kid will have the opportunity to play.

Voting has already started.
