Mine Road resurfacing project complete

A $2.9-million project to rehabilitate nine kilometres of Fording Mine Road near Elkford has been completed.

The project involved removing and replacing damaged asphalt, some base repairs and replacement of concrete roadside barriers. The completed roadwork improves safety for employees of Teck Coal and all other users of the road, which include forestry and recreational users such as hunters, fishers and snowmobilers.

“Fording Mine Road is an important, well-travelled route and it is now safer and more reliable, which is great news for Teck Coal workers and their families,” stated Kootenay East MLA Bill Bennett. “Teck is a key contributor to the economy of the East Kootenay and we expect the company to be operating here for many years to come.”

Work was completed by Interoute Construction Ltd. for the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure.

This project is part of B.C. on the Move, the provincial government’s 10-year plan for the improvement of B.C.’s transportation network.

As part of B.C. on the Move, more than $800 million over the next three years is dedicated to projects such as this one, which renew existing highways, bridges and side roads.
