Multiple other fire starts in blaze vicinity: RCMP

Cranbrook RCMP responded to a report of a home on fire in the 1400 Block of 30th Avenue North, shortly after 5:30 this morning.

Police arrived to find a home in the Northwood Estates engulfed in flames. Occupants of the residence were able to escape the burning building without injury. During the course of the investigation on-scene, police also determined that there were multiple other suspicious fire starts in the same residential area near the scene of the initial blaze.

Police believe that these fires were deliberately set, and as such, are investigating these incidents as criminal acts.

Cranbrook Fire and Emergency Services knocked down the blaze that destroyed the home and a couple of vehicles. Quick action by the fire department also saved a neighbouring house, which had siding melted during the incident.

Cranbrook RCMP S/Sgt. Dave Dubnyk expressed relief that no one was injured, and voiced the concern of all emergency responders about the possible tragic consequences of such a despicable act.

Residents of the area who may have seen anything suspicious, or have information about the identity of those responsible are asked to contact the Cranbrook RCMP at 250-489-3471, or Crimestoppers at 250-489-8477.
