Petition started to maintain campfire ban

A Kimberley resident has started an online petition to reinstate the campfire ban in the Southeast Fire District.

The ban was lifted for basic campfires yesterday (August 31).

“I recently read a news release on your site that announced the lifting of the campfire ban in our area. I was distressed! The last update I read on the Cherry Lake fire was that it was 1,250 hectares in size and not fully contained. I feel like our resources and our budget are already stretched, and that allowing campers to light fires is a risk that we shouldn’t be taking,” stated Kestrel Piche in an email to e-KNOW.

“As residents of B.C., we are concerned about the dry conditions and the growing forest fires (i.e. the Cherry Lake fire). We feel that lifting the fire ban at this time puts not only our forests but also our workplaces and homes at great risk. We ask that the campfire ban be reinstated,” Piche notes on her petition, which has 263 supporters at time of publication of this story.

The latest update from the BC Wildfire Service on the Cherry Lake fire has it still at 1,250 hectares and only 10% contained. Two other small fires reported yesterday near Mayook and south of Sparwood have been extinguished.
