Rally around Jumbo April 11 in Invermere

The Jumbo Creek Conservation Society is hosting a rally at the Invermere Community Hall on Wednesday, April 11 at 6:30 p.m.

The purpose behind the rally is to allow people to share their thoughts on the proposed $1 billion Glacier Resort Ltd. ski resort scheme, which received provincial government approval via the signing of the Master Development Agreement on March 20.

If constructed to specs the resort will feature 6,250 beds in an Alpine-style community located in the Jumbo Creek Valley, 55 km west of Invermere. The draw is to provide three-season skiing on adjacent glaciers and to provide access to high alpine country and views.

Stretching into its third decade since the idea egg was first cracked into the Crown land bowl that is B.C., Jumbo has become the symbolic edge of ‘progress’ in the region and the province when it comes to Crown land wilderness use – with clear lines drawn between opposition and supporters.

The Jumbo Creek Conservation Society was formed in the mid 1990s to provide project opponents with an organized voice and on April 11 the society is welcoming any and all to come to the Invermere Community Hall to be heard and to hear what guest speakers have to say.

They are urging participants to bring signs, placards and banners. People are asked to arrive at 6:30 and the rally will begin at 7 p.m.
