RDEK Board Highlights
The Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) Board of Directors Feb. 14 approved $42,000 in Community Works Funding for the Elko Well Upgrade Project. The project, which will take place as part of regularly scheduled maintenance on the system later this spring, will modernize the pump. This is expected to result in significant hydro savings for the water system.
2014 Conservation Fund projects approved
Ten projects have been approved for funding from the Columbia Valley Local Conservation Fund for 2014.
They include: Dutch Findlay Ecosystem Restoration—$19,920; Water Quality Attainment Monitoring—$3,000; – Strategic Invasive Plant Control, Leafy Spurge $5,500; Northern Leopard Frog Reintroduction—$29,890; Climate Action Initiatives—$25,000; Neighbourhood Invasive Plant Program—$13,000; Abel Creek Barrier Removal—$5,000; Kootenay Community Bat Project—$13,778; Lake Enid Restoration—$6,000; Columbia Lake Monitoring—$3,400
New Flood Control Service contemplated for Area A
RDEK staff will begin working on a new service establishment process for flood mitigation and control in Electoral Area A. If approved by the community, the new service would allow the RDEK provide regular inspection and maintenance of flood related infrastructure; and, collect funds to put in reserve to ensure adequate funding is available when mitigation work is required and to provide matching funds for grant programs. Staff will prepare information to share with the community in the coming weeks.
Mosquito Control Agreement signed
The board chair and chief administrative officer (CAO) have signed the agreement with Morrow Bioscience Ltd. for Mosquito Control Operations in the Wasa-Skookumchuck-Ta Ta Creek Mosquito Control Service Area for the term April 1, 2014 to March 31, 2015.
Emergency Coordinator and Deputy Coordinator appointments
Agreements have been signed with the Emergency Program Coordinators and Deputy Coordinators/ Emergency Social Services Directors (ESSD) for the three RDEK Emergency Programs through December 2014. The Coordinators and Deputies are as follows:
Columbia Valley: Coordinator Gary Burford, Deputy/ ESSD Sharon Pasowisty.
Central: Coordinator Dan Flegl, Deputy/ESSD Anita Charest.
Elk Valley and South Country: Coordinator Marianne Stone, Deputy/ESSD Jennifer Asselin.
Application to remove logjam
An application will be submitted to Front Counter BC for removal of the remainder of the Thompson Road area logjam, with costs to be paid by the Electoral Area A portion of the Elk Valley Mine Tax Sharing Funds.
Discretionary Grant-in-Aid (DGIA) funding
– The Fernie Snowmobile Association and Elk Valley Snowmobile Club will receive $2,500 from the Electoral Area A DGIA account for the Fernie Snow Drags, which were held February 15.
– Isabella Dicken School will receive $700 from the Electoral Area A DGIA account for the Grade 6 Blue Lake camping trip.
– The Wardner Cemetery Society will receive $1,915 from the Electoral Area B DGIA account to help cover costs associated with the cemetery clean up.
– The Cranbrook Women’s Recreational Hockey League will receive $500 from the Electoral Area C DGIA account to help cover ice and referee costs for their March 1/2 tournament.
– The Bissett Singers will receive $4,000 to help cover costs associated with their hosting of the 2014 International Choral Festival; $3,000 will come from the Electoral Area C DGIA account and the remaining $1,000 will come from the Electoral Area E DGIA account.
– The Windermere D.A.R.E. Program will receive $150 from the Electoral Area F DGIA account for learning materials.
– Friends of Children will receive $1,000 from the Electoral Area A DGIA account, $1,000 from the Electoral Area B DGIA account, $2,000 from the Electoral Area C DGIA account, $1,500 from the Electoral Area E DGIA account, $500 from the Electoral Area F DGIA account and $500 from the Electoral Area G DGIA account, for a total of $6,500 to help cover travel costs for East Kootenay families accessing medical services for their children.
Clean Wood Re-Use Pilot Project in Kimberley
A clean wood re-use facility pilot project will be undertaken at the Kimberley Transfer Station for a period of up to 12 months.
