Regional communities set to remember

The cities and towns of the East Kootenay are the sites of Remembrance Day ceremonies tomorrow, Nov. 11.

There are Remembrance Day ceremonies being held in Canal Flats, Cranbrook, Edgewater, Elkford, Fernie, Invermere, Kimberley and Sparwood.

The following are times and locations where the ceremonies are taking place:

Canal Flats – 10:30 a.m. at the Civic Centre, 8911 Dunn St.

Cranbrook – 10:30 a.m. at Rotary Park – 1st Street between 10th Avenue and 11th Avenue South. Parade starts at 10:30 a.m. from behind the East Kootenay Credit Union and the ceremony will begin at 11 a.m. in the park. Following the Remembrance Day ceremonies, spectators and marchers are invited back to Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 24 located in the basement of the Heritage Inn at 803 Cranbrook Street North. The public is invited to attend the Legion after 1 p.m.

Edgewater – 10:55 a.m. at Centennial Park. The community is invited to a free lunch at the legion after the ceremony is over.

Elkford – 10 a.m. at the Elkford Alliance Church on Alpine Way. Following the service, there will is a Memorial Parade to the Cenotaph in front of the District of Elkford town hall on Michel Road, starting at 10:45 a.m. Cenotaph Ceremony will begin at 11 am. Following the ceremony, there will be refreshments at the Elkford Community Conference Centre on Fording Drive. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Fernie – 10:40 a.m. the parade gets underway with a Cenotaph service starting at 10:55 a.m., on the front lawn of the Court House. Following the ceremony, residents are invited back to the Fernie Legion Hall for a service.

Invermere – At 11 a.m. the Royal Canadian Legion will lead a procession from 13th Street to the Main Street cenotaph where a formal ceremony will take place. Following the service, there will be lunch at the legion.

Kimberley – Parade fall in is at 10:30 at the Elks Hall, Howard Street; ceremony begins at 11 a.m. at the Kimberley Cenotaph. A post-ceremony including sandwiches and refreshments is being held at the Kimberley Elks Hall on Howard Street.

Sparwood – 10 a.m. church service at the Seniors Drop-In Centre. Following the church service, a parade will march from the Seniors Drop-In to the Cenotaph, with a ceremony starting just before 11 a.m. After the ceremony, the Seniors Drop-In Centre will have refreshments available. Legion Branch No. 81 in Sparwood will also host a hot meal following the ceremony. Children are welcome.

They shall not grow old as we who are left grow old. Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them.
