Sam Steele Days off to rollicking start

SSD Parade84Cranbrook’s annual community celebration – Sam Steele Days – is now well underway, with more to come tomorrow (Saturday), including the parade starting at 10:30 a.m.

The fun got off to a delicious start Thursday, June 18 with a pancake breakfast at Tamarack Centre.

With baseball and soccer teams registering and arriving and a full Saturday being prepared, Royal LePage East Kootenay Realty and Cranbrook Fire and Emergency Services combined for a barbecue on 10th Avenue this afternoon (Friday, June 18).

Along with a host of Sam Steele Society volunteers, hundreds of people attended the multi-faceted fundraiser, stopping to chat while dining on burgers and hot dogs.

Even more funds were raised as Jason Wheeldon (lead image) kept escorting a steady line of non Sam Steele Days button wearing barbecue attendees to the Sam Steele Jail. Once a ‘fine’ was paid and a button was procured, the prisoners, which included City of Cranbrook Mayor Lee Pratt at one point, were released.

Adding her usual colour to the proceedings was PT the Clown, who delighted more than the little girl featured in our photo collection below by lavishing them with face-painting.

CFES members set up a ‘princess’ piñata, which was promptly dispatched by the first two children who had cracks at it – creating a wee stampede of candy-snatching and giggling.

BC Ambulance members were also on hand to provide children with tours of an ambulance.

Despite the threat of rain and eventual arrival of said moisture, most event participants had smiles on their faces.

Sam Steele Days has arrived.

Please check HERE for a full schedule of events for tonight, which includes the Sweethearts of Sam Steele pageant at Key City Theatre, as well as Saturday and Sunday.
