Sand and sandbags mobilized for Elk Valley

With the heavy rain in the Elk Valley, melting and localized flooding is being reported.

Sand and sandbags are set up at the Fernie Mainroads yard, located at Dicken Road and Shop Road. Currently, it is a self-fill station; however, we have a 10-person Wildfire Management Branch Unit Crew en route from Cranbrook to assist with filling bags into this evening. The sandbags are available to anyone from Fernie or Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) Electoral Area A who needs them.

RDEK staff and emergency program personnel will be conducting assessments in West Fernie and Hosmer this afternoon.

If people are experiencing flooding or are concerned changing conditions may put them at risk of flooding, they can contact 1-800-663-3456. This is the Provincial Emergency Coordination Centre and they will notify the appropriate emergency program personnel.

Additional updates will be provided to the local media, on the RDEK Facebook page and to RDEK email groups this evening once the assessment is complete.

The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure and Mainroad Contracting are also dealing with a number of issues along roads and highways in the Elk Valley. For the latest road conditions, visit www.drivebc.ca.
