Scam alerts in valley
Columbia Valley RCMP Nov. 4 issued an alert about possible scams being attempted.
“Report has been received that people who are posting a car for sale on social media are receiving calls where people are offering more money than the asking price. Caller would like your banking information so he can deposit the money and someone will come and pick up the car,” explained Columbia Valley RCMP Detachment NCO S/Sgt. Marko Shehovac.
He also noted a second, commonly attempted scam that is making rounds.
“As a result of personal information that can be gained on social media we have received a report of an attempt to scam grandparents out of sending money to the caller claiming to be a grandson or granddaughter in financial trouble,” Shehovac said.
“The callers are able to throw out personal information to convince you they are indeed family members. Much of the personal information can be gained via social media,” he said.
