SD5 Board Notes

The following is a summary of motions carried by the School District No. 5 (SD5) School Board of Trustees during their March board meeting in Cranbrook.

Motions Carried

Advocacy

That the Board write a letter of support for the Columbia Basin Environmental Education Network (CBEEN).

That the Board write an urgent, open letter to the Premier and Minister of Education requesting the following*:

1. Government directs BCPSEA and its appointed negotiator to immediately begin genuine, good-faith bargaining with the BCTF.

2. Government assure all school boards that government will take full financial responsibility for any costs arising from grievances, arbitrations and legal actions against boards that are now not in compliance with the Collective Agreements with teachers due to the recent ruling of the BC Supreme Court.

3. Government provides adequate funding to districts to enable them to be in compliance with the Collective Agreements that are now back in effect.

4. Government restore education funding to a level that enables school districts to restore all service levels to the equivalent of those provided in 2002, adjusted for enrolment and inflation.

5. Government make sincere efforts to bargain and resolution for any retroactive claims for board non-compliance with CAs due to Bill 2, 28, 27 or 22.

Policy

That the Board of Education approve the revised policy 3.15 French Immersion.

General

That the Board ratify the appointment of Jason Tichauer as Director of Student Learning and Aboriginal Education.

Three readings of the Capital Project Bylaw – Project No. 126684 Carbon Neutral Capital Program (expenditure of $131,687).
