Storm warning now includes Elk Valley

Environment Canada has update its Special Weather Statement for the East Kootenay.

The statement is now strictly for the Elk Valley, with the possibility of strong winds and heavy rain this afternoon.

A powerful storm is arriving in the BC Interior today. The system will race through the Central Interior this afternoon and then stall across the south interior this evening. Strong winds with gusts over 70 km/h will develop across the Central Interior in the morning and spread southward this afternoon, Environment Canada reported.

“Locally heavy precipitation will accompany the front. Snow will develop over the Columbia regions in the morning and spread to the Kootenays. Rising freezing levels will turn the snow to rain over most of the Kootenay regions in the afternoon. The storm may linger over the far southern part of the province on Friday producing a prolonged period of heavy precipitation,” Environment Canada forecasted.

Mainroad East Kootenay Contracting LP reports it is prepared for the incoming storm.

“Please be assured that Mainroad crews will be out actively patrolling addressing any road concerns throughout the time the storm is expected,” the company stated in a public notice.

If you note any road issues please report them to Mainroad’s 24-hour communication centre at 1-800-665-4929.
