SunMine groundbreaking approaches

An event to commemorate breaking ground on SunMine, a 1.05 Megawatt solar facility situated on reclaimed land on the former Teck Sullivan Mine site in Kimberley, is taking place July 7.

Among the officials joining City of Kimberley Mayor Ron McRae and council members in the ceremony are: Bill Bennett, BC Minister of Energy and Mines and Kootenay East MLA; Mark Edwards, Vice President Government and Community Relations, Teck; Greg Deck, Board Chair, Columbia Basin Trust; Dina Matterson, Manager, BC Hydro Standing Offer Program; and Jared Donald, President, Conergy Canada.

The energy-generating project is community owned, distinct and well suited to capitalize on Kimberley’s clear and sunny conditions.

Upon completion, the SunMine will be:

  • The largest solar facility west of Ontario.
  • The first re-development of a large reclaimed mine site into a solar farm in Canada.
  • The first large solar project supported by a mining company in Canada.
  • The first utility scale solar facility developed, owned, and operated by a Canadian municipality.
  • The first 1000V DC solar installation outside of Ontario.
  • One of the first grid-connected solar Photovoltaic installations in B.C.
  • The first large-scale project in Western Canada to use solar trackers.

The groundbreaking ceremony will originate at the Kimberley Conference & Athlete Training Centre.
