Sustainable Community Builder of the Year named

City of Cranbrook council April 25 unanimously approved Robert Williams as the 2015 Sustainable Community Builder of the Year.

Sustainable Community Builder of the Year Award Committee members Councillor Wesly Graham, Councillor Isaac Hockley and Councillor Danielle Cardozo reviewed five nominations submitted.

At the meeting members reviewed the “four pillars” of sustainability: social well-being, cultural vibrancy, economic health and natural/built environment.

“Members reviewed the applications against the advertised selection criteria, particularly in regard to evidence that the applicant demonstrated that their action/achievement addressed more than one of the four pillars of sustainability,” noted a city Communications/Corporate Services report.

Robert Williams, a Ktunaxa Nation member, is the majority owner of two businesses – Tipi Mountain Native Plants and Tipi Mountain Eco-Cultural Services. He is also a tireless volunteer, noted Coun. Cardozo.

“We spent a couple of hours going back and forth” over the nominations and Williams met all four pillars of sustainability, she said, adding, “From elders to youth, general Cranbrook population to First Nations in particular.”

The award recipient will be provided $500 to be donated to his charity of choice, thanks to a partnership with the Cranbrook and District Community Foundation (CDCF). The money for the grant comes from the legacy fund left to the CDCF by the Knights of Pythias, Crescent Lodge #33 of Cranbrook.
