Time capsule dedicated

A number of the roughly 100 people attending the June 19 dedication of the Sam Steele Society Time Capsule won’t be around when it is opened.

And a few of the attendees will only be pushing into their mid 20s when it is opened in 2039, to commemorate the 75th anniversary of Sam Steele Days.

The Sam Steele Society (society) earlier this year invited the community to leave a legacy inside the vessel, the society explains on its website. “Some wrote a letter to a future student or citizen, some composed a poem or song, some told their story, and others submitted an item, picture/photo/painting. They described life in Cranbrook, their business or lifestyle, or what they liked best about our community or festival.”

A host of dignitaries were on hand for the dedication behind the Cranbrook and District Chamber of Commerce, emceed by Mike Adams.

Kootenay East MLA Bill Bennett and City of Cranbrook Mayor Wayne Stetski addressed the crowd, as did several key volunteers who helped make the time capsule happen.

The society would like to express sincere gratitude to the businesses whose generosity and sense of community spirit enabled this commemorative project to become a reality; Fabrite Services Ltd. for donating the materials, design and construction of the Time Capsule vessel; WolfPack Signs & Printing for the custom 2D sign on the vessel identifying its significance to all who stop to admire; Roderick’s Skid-Steer Service Ltd. preparing the location and for the rock slab to mount the completed Time Capsule; Signal Collision in Cranbrook for the custom paint job: Lord Co Parts Ltd for supplying the quality paint product and also to Interior Sports & Trophies for creating and donating the plaque inscribed with the dedication to our future community.

The dedication helped kick off the 50th anniversary of Sam Steele Days, now rolling in full twirly moustached glory around Cranbrook. See/click the interactive bar at the bottom of e-KNOW to see a full schedule of events.
