Utility rate increases now in effect

Effective January 1, residential utility rates will be going up by $25.05 per quarter for residences with garbage pickup in the City of Kimberley.

Garbage collection rates have not changed since 1991. Increasing costs for electricity, natural gas, gasoline, diesel fuel, wages and maintenance are reflected in this increase.  These additional funds will be directly applied to operational costs in departments servicing water, sewer and garbage collection (currently paid from property taxes).

A reserve fund is being created for the replacement of heavy equipment used in the water, sewer and garbage departments.  Through the creation of a heavy equipment replacement reserve fund, the city will become less reliant upon leasing and borrowing to finance these purchases.

Council will decide during upcoming budget deliberations how much of the funds shifted from general taxation to utility fees (approximately $175,000) will be utilized toward infrastructure renewal or tax reduction.

Rates for residential properties

Sewer – $67.46

Water – $104.59

Garbage – $14.40

Total per quarter =   $186.45 with garbage pickup

$172.05 without garbage pickup

If you are on the monthly prepayment plan, the monthly amount will now be $62.15 ($57.35 for strata properties without garbage collection).
