Wanted Langley man apprehended near Fernie

A Langley man wanted in connection to an attempted murder and house fire was apprehended this morning near Fernie.

LangleyRIchardAndre Harvey Richard, 44, was arrested following a brief standoff that forced the closure of Highway 3.

At approximately 10:30 a.m., Elk Valley RCMP received a report of an erratic / possibly impaired driver near Fernie. The complainant was able to follow the suspect until the vehicle came to a stop.

Richard exited his vehicle and went into the roadside bush. A crisis negotiator was called and local police attended – after some time, Richard was taken into custody without further incident.

Langley RCMP April 2 obtained an arrest warrant for Richard for breaching his condition of no contact with his estranged wife. These circumstances relate to an attempted murder / house fire in the Willowbrook area of Langley.

The victim from yesterday morning’s attempted murder is in stable condition, recovering in hospital and receiving support from Langley RCMP Client Support and Victim Services.

Langley RCMP Serious Crime Investigators are preparing to travel to Cranbrook, where Richard was taken, to follow through on the investigation.

A Report to Crown Counsel will be completed later this afternoon and submitted for charge approval. It is anticipated formal charges will be laid within the next 24 hours.
