East Kootenay Air & Army Cadets Home-towner

Army Cadet Shelby Brown from Golden was at the Kootenay Cadet Sports Weekend held at Selkirk College in Castlegar on the weekend of January 27-29.

The Sports weekend had 160 cadets from 12 cadet units from the East and West Kootenay. During the weekend, the cadets did a fitness assessment, team sports, swimming and orienteering.

Shelby has been with the Golden Army Cadet Corp for just over two years. She lives in Golden and attends the Golden Secondary School.

Shelby has attended two summer training courses, both at the Vernon Cadet Summer Training Centre. In 2015, she attended General Training, and in 2016 she was on the Basic Band course.

Natasha has been on trips with her corps to Victoria and Edmonton. She also enjoys the leadership and marksmanship aspects of the program. In cadets, she has learned leadership, discipline, marksmanship and fitness.

In the future, Natasha hopes to attend the Intermediate Band course and also improve her leadership and survival skills.

Outside of cadets, Shelby is a soccer player and plays trumpet in her school band.

The Cadet program, which includes Sea, Army and Air Cadets, is the largest government funded youth program in Canada with over 50,000 participants across Canada. The cadet program accepts youth between the ages of 12-18 who have a desire to learn more about the air element of the Canadian Forces, wish to develop the attributes of leadership and good citizenship and who wish to promote physical fitness. While the program is military based, there is no obligation for a cadet to join the Canadian Armed Forces.
