Cranbrook getting ready to rock on

Cranbrook’s Clock Tower is now sporting massive banners proclaiming the upcoming Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling.

grand-slam-curling-banner-launchCanadian curling legend Kevin Martin, representatives of national broadcaster Sportsnet, Cities of Cranbrook and Kimberley officials and local event volunteers gathered on Baker Street at 2 p.m. this afternoon to officially launch the countdown to the Nov. 8-13 bonspiels.

Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling Tour Challenge, one of the biggest bonspiels in the world, is being held at Cranbrook’s Western Financial Place and Memorial Arena.

The events will feature world-class curlers, Olympic medalists, and the brightest new stars on the global circuit.

Tier 1 will feature 30 of the top men’s and women’s teams ranked one to 15 in the world competing at Western Financial Place. Memorial Arena will host the Tier 2 men’s and women’s competition, where they will be playing against each other in search of a berth into the top ranks of the tour.

Edmonton resident Martin is considered by many to be the greatest curler of all time. Though the past two years, Martin remains closed to the game and is eagerly anticipating this November’s event. “It’s going to be a blast,” he said.

The big curling show will place Cranbrook front and centre on national television for six days and provide excellent exposure for the city and region, noted Cranbrook Mayor Lee Pratt.

Now the big task at hand is for the community to get behind the event.

Volunteers are still required to help stage this large national event and sponsorship opportunities remain, which will provide national exposure.
