Key City Theatre celebrating 25th anniversary

The year 1992 was a very good one.

That was the year we saw the Blue Jays win the World Series. Everyone was swooning over the likes of Fabio and Cindy Crawford. We knew that “you can’t handle the truth” and that there is “no crying in baseball.” We shook our booties to ‘Achy Breaky Heart’, ‘Baby Got Back’ and ‘I’m Too Sexy.’ For many of us, the real highlight of the year occurred on the evening of February 11, 1992, when Key City Theatre opened its doors for the very first time in Cranbrook.

Sarah McLachlan

A little known singer named Sarah McLachlan christened the space with her haunting melodies. It was an auspicious start and certainly a sign of things to come. Our stage has been shining brightly ever since.

Now 25 years later as the region’s premier centre for the performing arts, the Key City Theatre is more exciting than ever. To celebrate this milestone, you are invited to join us for SPECTACULAR! SPECTACULAR!, our Gala Celebration, on Saturday April 22. This will certainly be the most talked about event of the decade!

The evening will start at 6 p.m. with an ALL THAT JAZZ Red Carpet Reception in the lobby. Groove to the smooth jazz sounds of the Dean Smith Trio while you enjoy delicious gourmet appetizers from The Heid Out: chilled Szechuan prawns, pulled pork sliders with fisher peak soggy otter brown ale bbq sauce, fresh cut vegetables with roasted garlic aioli, chicken meatballs with fresh ginger and scallions, smoked salmon mousse on crostini, mini vegetable spring rolls with char siu dipping sauce. The food alone is reason enough to come!

You will need all that energy as you outbid your friends on a huge array of exciting items in our silent auction. Be sure to pick up a fistful of raffle tickets, enter for the chance to win some amazing door prizes, and don’t forget to have your photo taken on the red carpet by our paparazzi.

We will move into the theatre at 7 p.m. for our grand event: SPECTACULAR! SPECTACULAR! Led by our Master of Ceremonies, Barry Coulter, the evening will feature special tributes to two important visionaries; Paul Kershaw and Rod Osiowy. These beloved theatre luminaries worked tirelessly over the years to build the reputation for excellence that Key City Theatre enjoys.

Jeremy Raymond

We invite you to take part in a fond look back at the many rising stars who had their humble beginnings on the Key City Theatre stage. Special guest performers include: Jeremy Raymond who grew up doing plays at Mount Baker Secondary School and has gone on to have a successful career in theatre and films.

Did you catch him in the last two Star Trek movies?

Sarah Aleem

Sarah Aleem, who began singing and playing at the theatre at a very tender age, and has returned since then to perform with the Celtic Tenors. The Symphony of the Kootenays is also joining us to celebrate.

Tyrel Hawke, winner of Kootenay’s Best Singer and well-known local celebrity, will be serenading us with his soulful sounds. Amy Morrison, whom we watched grow up on the stage is taking a short break out of her final year in Medical School to perform for us once again.

To round out an already fantastic evening we are thrilled to present Clayton Parsons, Joelle Winkel, Caitlin McCaughey, Elizabeth Ross, The Kimberley Community Choir, Stages School of Dance, Aspire Dance Company, Mount Baker Vocal Jazz and many more special guests.

The evening will showcase a wide variety of entertainment that is sure to have to you cheering for more.
