Nanaimo ICE – not

Voters in the City of Nanaimo have resoundingly said ‘no’ to providing a new home for the East Kootenay’s Western Hockey League team – Kootenay ICE.

Nanaimo voters were asked in a referendum concluded March 11: “Are you in favour of the City of Nanaimo Council adopting Loan Authorization Bylaw 2017 No. 7237 which will authorize Council to borrow a sum not exceeding $80,000,000, repayable over a period of no more than 20 years, for the development and construction of an event centre that will include an ice arena and other related entertainment, cultural and recreation facilities?”

It was reported the ICE were being sought as the anchor tenant for the proposed Nanaimo events centre.

However, once the votes were tallied following the referendum, 19,179 Nanaimo residents voted no, while 4706 voted yes.
