Fernie Council Connection

The following is a synopsis of what occurred during the March 27 City of Fernie council meeting.

1. REPORTS TO COUNCIL

1.1 West Fernie Official Community Plan Amendment Advisory Committee   Council approved the Terms of Reference for creation of an Advisory Committee to assist in the analysis of public input and review to incorporate newly acquired West Fernie lands in the City of Fernie planning framework. The committee will help with the engagement process ensuring community input and involvement.

1.2 Appointment to the Beautification Committee Council authorized the appointment of a public-at-large member to the Beautification Committee to develop strategies and recommendations in support beautification of public spaces and commercial & residential neighbourhoods.

1.3 Youth Action Network Council approved an amendment to the Terms of Reference for the Youth Action Network Oversight Committee to include representation for Home Schooled Youth. Through funding and resources from Columbia Basin Trust (CBT) the city has developed a Youth Action program aimed to keep youth aged 12-18 active and engaged in our community. 1.4 Flood Mitigation Funding The City of Fernie received $150,000 of funding from the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure for Non-Structural Flood Mitigation covering risk assessment, flood mapping and mitigation planning.

1.5 2017 Capital Works Program Council adopted new road design standards for 2017 Capital Works Programs for 7th Street, 1st Avenue (14th St & 15th St) and a portion of 2nd Avenue. Paving will take place during the upcoming construction season.

2. BYLAWS

2.1 Bylaw No. 2317 cited as Leisure Services User Regulation and Fees Bylaw was adopted. The bylaw updates regulations and fees for use of recreational facilities and was developed with extensive public engagement and input by community organizations.

3. OTHER INFORMATIONAL ITEMS

3.1 School Zone Safety  The City of Fernie would like to remind drivers of the importance of driving and parking safely in school zones. To help make our streets safer for our children, we ask drivers to please be courteous and park responsibly when dropping off or picking up children from school.

3.2 Spring Registration Fair is April 5 and 6 at the Fernie Community Centre, located at 901 6th Ave & Highway 3 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. If you would like to register for a FREE table, please contact Sharon Switzer at [email protected] or 250-423-2245.

3.3 Canada Day Celebrations  If you are interested in joining our Canada Day Committee for the celebration of our 150th year please contact Sharon Switzer at [email protected] or 250-423-2245.

3.4 Fernie Memorial Arena Hall of Fame  Do you know someone who has made a significant contribution to qualify of life in Fernie by promoting sports and recreation participation at the Fernie Memorial Arena. Nominate this person for the Fernie Memorial Hall of Fame.
