New phone system approved for district

District of Sparwood council Oct. 3 approved a capital expenditure of $40,000 for a new district telephone system.

The existing Nortel telephone system, which was purchased in 2008, is antiquated and it is becoming very difficult to source replacement parts for the system.

The existing system also poses safety issues in that when someone places a 911 call from any district telephone it indicates to the 911 operator that the phone call is being placed from the Main Office when in fact the call could be coming from the Leisure Centre, Public Works, or Fire Hall.

A new system will also provide accurate location information, the district explained.

Council approved the award of an Allworx telephone system for the district to Isosceles Business Systems. The project has a payback of just over two years with an annual savings of $18,000.
